The city of Hull forms where the River Hull and River Humber meet, enabling Hull to be the third largest port in England. World War II took it's toll on the city of Hull, destroying many historic buildings, spurring a phase of reconstruction. In 1981, the Humber Bridge, currently known as one of the largest single span suspended bridges in the world, opened, connecting the borough of Hessle with Barton upon Humber in Lincolnshire.
